Denver International Airport opened its gates in 1929. It was the ambitious project of then Mayor Benjamin Stapleton. In fact, the airport’s original names included Stapleton Airfield and Stapleton International Airport. Until 1972, it consisted of three concourses before another runway was constructed to alleviate congestion.
